Noble Gases

Radon! 1s2 2s2 2p6 3s2 3p6 4s2 3d10 4p6 5s2 4d10 5p6 6s2 4f14 5d10 6p6 Atomic Number: 86 Atomic Weight: 222 Melting Point: -71.0 C Boiling Point: -61.8 C Phase: Gas - Radon colorless, odorless, and tasteless. When frozen, it becomes phosphorescent, glowing yellow. It changes to orange-red at very low temperatures. - It was first oberserved in 1899 by British R.B. Owens and Rutherford, it was the last of the Noble Gases to be discovered. - If rising levels from the ground can signify an increased likehood in an earthqauke. - Radon is produced by radioactive decay of radium, another element in the Periodic Table which is found in the Alkali Earth Metals. It is not found in living things, and may be a health hazard.

The noble gases consist of Helium (He), neon (Ne), argon (Ar), krypton (Kr), xenon (Xe) and radon (Rn). Noble Gases are the least reactive out of all the elements on the periodic table of elements. Lack of reactivity- tendency to remain apart- is a characteristic of nobility.

HELIUM! 1s2 Atomic Number: 2 Atomic Weight: 4.002602 Melting Point: -272.2 C Boiling Point: -268.93 C Phase: GAS! - Was founded by Pierre Janssen in 1868. - Helium is the second must abundant element on earth and was discovered on the sun before it was discovered on earth. It is inert (unreactive) colorless and odorless. - Since 1986, the price of helium is $37.50/1000 ft cubed. - Helium has the lowest melting point of any element, and is used widely in cryogenic research because it's boiling point is close to absolute zero. - Helium is the only element that cannot be solidified by lowering the temperature. - It is too light to be found in our atmosphere, but is found in natural gas and hotter stars in the solar system. - Cold helium is a fourth state of matter because it goes from insulator to a superconductor of electricity. - Helium is obtained by liquefying natural gas. - Helium is often used in balloons, and when sucked in it makes ones voice extremely high pitched sounding.

Xenon! 1s2 2s2 2p6 3s2 3p6 4s2 3d10 4p6 5s2 4d10 5p6 Atomic Number: 54 Xenon was founded in 1898 by Sir William Ramsay, it is derived Atomic Mass: 131.3 from the Greek word xenon, stranger. It is colorless, odorless, tasteless Melting Point: -111.9 C and inert. Xenon's compounds are known to be toxic and exist in Boiling Point: -108.1 C martian atmospheres. It is found by liquefying air, and is used in light Phase: Gas bulbs, flash photography, and bulbs that kill bacteria. When it is excited by an electric charge in a vaccuum, it gives off a blue glow which is the source of strobe lights.

Neon! 1s2 2s2 2p6 Atomic Number: 10 Atomic Weight: 20.1797 Melting Point: -248.59 C Boiling Point: -246.08 C Phase: Gas Neon is normally seen in the bright lighting outside of stores. It's characteristic glow is a reddish orange glow. It is obtained by liquefying air, and is not found in living things. In 1898, it was founded by Sir William Ramsay, it is from the Greek word neos, which means "new." Liquid neon is commercially used as a crygenic refrigerent.

Krypton! 1s2 2s2 2p6 3s2 3p6 4s2 3d10 4p6 Atomic Number: 36 Atomic Weight: 83.80 Melting Point: -157.2 C Boiling Point: -153.4 C Phase: Gas - Krypton is normally characterized by it's green and orange spectral lines. - Heavier than air, colorless, odorless and tasteless. - When excited by electricity, it gives off a bluish white light. - It was founded by Sir William Ramsay in 1898. - There are traces of krypton on the planet mars. - From the Greek word krytos, which means hidden. - It is used in certain chemical analysis and photographic bulbs for high-speed photography.

Argon- 1s2 2s2 2p6 3s2 3p6 Atomic Number: 18 Atomic weight: 39.948 Melting Point: -189.3 C Boiling Point: -186 C Argon was discovered in 1894 by Sir William Ramsay and is unable to form compounds with other elements. Argon is also the most abundant element of the noble gases. It is colorless, odorless, and tasteless. It is heavier than air, it makes up 1.00 % of the Earth. In Greek, it means ''lazy one.'' It is the product of removing nitrogen, pxygen, carbon dioxide and water from liquid air. It is not an active substance, and it used in light bulbs. Argon is used in Geiger counters, which measure radiation.
